The Idea:
Make money writing articles for magazines and websites
How it Works:
Magazines, websites and other publications are in constant need of good articles to fill their pages. If you can write quickly and effectively, you can sell articles to the companies that need them. You"ll probably have to work your way up to selling to the major newsstand magazines, but there are literally thousands of smaller venues where you can start selling your work, from local newsletters you find in your doctor's office to trade magazines you find at your workplace. Start out by sending a query letter - a pitch describing the article you'd like to write, what your sources would be and why you'd be perfect for the assignment. Once you have a few clips under your belt, pitch to bigger- and better paying- magazines. It might take a while to build up enough regular assignments to make a living as a freelance writer, but if you live for seeing your name in print this could be the start of a lucrative career. You don't have to be a full-time writer, either. Freelance writing can also be a fun hobby that brings in a little extra cash. Plus, there's always the bonus of seeing your byline in your favorite magazine.
How Much Can You Make:
Freelance articles can pay as little as $5 per article up to $2 per word for major magazines. The more experience you have, the higher the pay you can demand. Most professionals recommend not writing articles for free, even as a beginner. Small publications that pay you a pittance are viewed as more professional than non-paying venues and will help you advance more quickly.
