Professional Equestrian - Gig Profile

The Idea:

Manage a private training barn or stable where you house other people's horses and give horseback riding lessons.

How it Works:

If you have a talent for working with horses and the patience and organization required to run a stable, this job could be for you. You'll need land and horses of your own to start. Build up your reputation as a caring and professional stable hand to encourage people to board their horses with you. Decide on what style of lessons you want to give, English or Western, and how you will structure horse rentals. (Will you require a guide accompany renters or allow full-scale multi-day horsepackers to rent a horse for an extended period of time?) Promote your stable through local horse events, community groups and tourism associations. Attend riding competitions and state fairs to build the reputation of your stables and promote your business.

How Much Can You Make:

Being a professional equestrian can be a profitable labor of love. Some stable owners make over $100,000 per year after many years of experience. Starting income will be lower and this gig requires a large investment to get started.
