A controversial new social networking site called Yuwie recently opened
online that pays members to participate. It works by giving members a
portion of the ad revenue when they or their referrals spend time on the
site.
On the positive side, Yuwie points out that it gives members back some
of the ad money that other social networking sites keep for themselves.
The detractors of Yuwie don't like the dependence on referrals to make
money, comparing it, like many of the surf-for-pay sites that have come
and gone, to pyramid schemes and MLMs.
The SweetGigs take? We're willing to try Yuwie, but honestly don’t see
ourselves spending much time there. The site is quite ad-heavy, which
is nice for shared ad revenue, but not really what I want to see in a
social networking site. Plus, there are so many social networking sites
out there and most of our editorial staff here has their own personal
favorites already. But maybe sometimes during some boring Tuesday
afternoon downtime I might play around on Yuwie and bring some of my
friends along.
Of course, if any readers of this blog want to try Yuwie, I'd love to
have you as my referral.
