Specialty Baker - Gig Profile

The Idea:

Make cookies, breads or other specialty-baked goods to sell locally.

How it Works:

Nothing tastes better than homemade, and cooks who can consistently produce that homemade taste can make money selling their wares to restaurants, B&Bs, coffeeshops, boutiques and individuals. The key to becoming a successful specialty-goods baker is to specialize in a single product or line of products. Cookies, cakes, breads, pies or muffins are all potential options. Promote yourself to places labeling themselves as "local" businesses. For example, you might be able to secure a contract as an exclusive provider of pies for a local restaurant or fresh-baked afternoon cookies for a Bed and Breakfast. Local shops might sell your goods if they are packaged attractively.

How Much Can You Make:

The earning potential is practically unlimited. Basically, the more you can bake, the more you can sell. Wholesale prices might be $3-5 per dozen cookies or $5-10 per cake and selling directly to customers can bring in $20-30 per dozen cookies or single cake or pie.
